MASTERS PROGRAM IN ENTOMOLOGY

The University of Panama offers a Masters level program in entomology with three areas of specialization: general entomology, agricultural entomology, and medical entomology. This regional program is designed to meet the needs of Central and South American students. The language of instruction is Spanish. Areas of strength include: insects of the forest canopy, gall insects, tropical fruit flies, and biological control of pasture pest insects.

Research emphasis of the Masters Program in Entomology at the University of Panama reflects national and regional priorities and the areas of expertise of the faculty. The following programs are offered:

TAXONOMY, EVOLUTION AND PHYLOGENY OF INSECTS

• Diptera, especially Tephritoidea, Agromyzidae and Sphaeroceridae
• Coleoptera, especially Curculionidae

INSECT ECOLOGY

• Herbivory and Biodiversity in the forest canopy
• Gall-forming insects
• Geographic distribution of fruit flies
• Plant-insect interactions in Tephritids

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT

• Integrated management of rice insects
• Integrated management of tomato insects

MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY

• Ecology, sampling methods, and mosquito control
• Ecology, sampling methods of Culicoides (Ceratopogonidae)
• Taxonomy and ecology of triatomids (Reduviidae)
